Arif Kabir Named 2024 PIOUS Selod Scholar

Arif Kabir of Laurel, Maryland was recently awarded one of the prestigious TISA PIOUS Selod Scholarships. The PIOUS – Farooq I. Selod Scholarship is named after Dr. Farooq I. Selod (d. May 2020), a respected medical doctor who was very civically engaged in both the Muslim community and the broader US society. His passion for the type of Muslim leadership training offered by The Islamic Seminary of America (TISA) was evident from the moment he was elected to the TISA board in July of 2017. Arif Kabir is exactly the type of student that Dr. Selod wanted to support.

In his application for this competitive scholarship, Arif Kabir made the following statement:

“After graduation, I intend to expand my volunteer commitments to encompass a minimum of 20 hours per week, focusing on areas such as youth chaplaincy, nonprofit leadership, and active engagement within local mosques. As the Executive Director of Muslim Youth Musings, a registered 501(c)(3) literary nonprofit, and as a board member of the DMV Muslim Youth Council, I am currently involved in initiatives like the Night of Unity, which annually unites over a dozen mosques for iftar and Taraweeh prayers. These roles have provided me with invaluable experience and insight into the pressing needs of our community.”
